HE
I’m tired, you know?

SHE
Huh?

HE
Nothing.

(pause)

SHE
So I get up and when I turn around I see that the guy’s wearing a hat that just says “SHIT.” That’s it.

HE
Like a baseball cap, or-

SHE
It was like a ubiquitous winter hat. Where you roll the bottom up and there’s a logo or whatever. Except on this guy’s it just says “SHIT” in big white letters.

HE
Black guy?

SHE
Yeah, but not like a big black guy. Medium-sized. And he’s not acting weird or anything, he’s just sitting there with a hat that says “SHIT” on it.

HE
And he wasn’t-

SHE
He was totally comfortable. Like he wore it all the time. And then this woman gets on the train with like a six or seven year old girl and sits right next to him.

HE
Do you have a cigarette?

SHE
What?

HE
Nothing.

SHE
You want a cigarette?

HE
No. Go on.

SHE
I thought you quit.

HE
I did. Right. Go on.

SHE
I’ll give you a cigarette if you really want one.

HE
Ok.

SHE
You really want one?

HE
Yeah.

SHE
You told me never to give you a cigarette ever again.

HE
I know.

SHE
Never again, you said.

HE
It’d be easier if you quit, too.

SHE
I don’t want to quit.

HE
You should. It’s bad for you.

SHE
I have a death wish.

HE
And with all the money you’d save, you could take a trip!

SHE
Where? Where?

HE
Somewhere else. Somewhere free of “SHIT” hats.

(pause)

SHE
So this woman and her six or seven year old are sitting next to this guy wearing a hat that says “SHIT” on it. And once the woman gets situated she looks over and sees the hat and then she, like, looks away really fast.

HE
What about the kid?

SHE
The kid is sitting in her lap staring straight at it, like she’s mesmerized by the word “SHIT.” The mom tries to turn the kid away from the hat, and the kid starts to, like, reach out to the word.

HE
Reaching for shit, if you will.

SHE
Is that a saying? “Reaching for shit?”

HE
Yeah.

SHE
“Reaching for shit?” I’ve never heard that before.

HE
It’s from that song.

SHE
What? “Reaching for Shit?” Who’s that by?

HE
It was like this punk anthem way back when.

SHE
What band?

HE
People say it all the time! “What are you doing?” “I’m reaching for shit.”

SHE
What does that even mean?

HE
It’s pretty straightforward.

SHE
What? That someone’s reaching for shit? Why would anyone do that?

HE
Not literal shit, just like… bad things.

SHE
Why would someone reach for bad things?

HE
Accidentally.

SHE
I don’t think you can accidentally reach.

HE
No, you can.

SHE
Reaching is deliberate.

HE
You could be reaching for one thing and end up with something else. Something bad. Something like shit.

SHE
That’s true.
