Last night I watched as a black man was overwhelmingly elected President of the United States. While over the last few weeks this was an outcome that seemed likely – inevitable, even – it wasn’t until I saw him standing on a stage with his family and accepting the job in front of the entire world that it really sunk in.
I never thought I would live to see a black president, and the reality of it has – rather unexpectedly – flushed away the cynicism that I’d built up over the last eight years and replaced it with optimism and hope.
Nothing is impossible.
I am as surprised to write these words as I am at the profound sincerity with which I do so, but I am proud to be an American today.
Finally.
