Possible Threat to the Community: “Your Right to Know”
Jan. 4, 2006

In compliance with the “timely notice” provisions of the federal Jeanne
Clery Disclosure Act of 1998, the Savannah College of Art and Design
college security department is giving notice of an act of violence that
occurred Dec. 24 at 3 a.m. in Orleans Square, adjacent to SCAD
facilities, which were closed at the time during winter break.

The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department is actively
investigating the homicide of Jennifer Ross, who was shot during an
attempted robbery. According to news reports, Ross was walking with
friends through the square when three men attempted to rob them. One of
the men struck Ross’ friend, Brett Findley, 19, in the head with a gun.
Another suspect struggled to get Ross’ purse. Shots were fired. One
bullet struck Ross in her lower back. One of the victims and witnesses
described the suspects as three black males wearing dark clothing, with
hoods over their heads. Their physical descriptions varied in heights
ranging from 5-feet-9-inches to 6-feet tall. They reportedly drove off
in a pewter gray-colored Ford Taurus after the attack.

While Ross and her friends were not associated with SCAD, this timely
notification is being issued due to the proximity of the crime to SCAD

Until the investigation has been concluded it can be assumed that
conditions continue to exist that may pose a threat to members and
guests of the SCAD community. It is the duty of the institution to
warn of possible “dangerous conditions” near its property; an
“affirmative duty” exists to warn of possible peril at the hands of
some third party.

Please forward this notice to other concerned people and post it on
appropriate bulletin boards in your area. If you have any information
that might be helpful in this investigation, please contact the college
security department at 912.525.4500 or security@scad.edu; SCMPD at
912.232.4141; or anonymously through College CrimeStoppers at

More information about the college security department at SCAD and its
safety initiatives and programs will be available in the Jan. 6 issue
of The Chronicle.
