first day of classes

Today is the first day of classes–I have one class (Intro to Video Production) from 3-5:30.

I have been (pleasantly) surprised during my first week here to meet people who either had trouble getting accepted to SCAD themselves, or who know someone who wasn’t accepted.  I had been under the impression that most of the people who took the trouble to put together an application package got accepted here, it’s good to find out that this isn’t the case.  Actually, after hearing about the portfolios that most of the other first-year MFA film students sent in, I’m surprised that I got accepted.

On the negative side of things, there is quite a bit of paranoia among the students about the crime rate here in Savannah.  Apparently the haphazard renovation and subsequent gentrification of the historic homes has created a situation where there are very economically mixed neighborhoods.  Combine this with a high population of largely naive college students, and the result seems to be a higher than average per capita violent crime rate–mostly robbery.  Many students are afraid to walk around alone at night, and while I can’t say whether or not this is a sound judgment, it strikes me as profoundly sad that this beautiful city has been (seemingly) hijacked by fear.  The reality is that the chances of getting mugged or assaulted in Savannah are still very remote, but the media and the student gossip circles have blown this issue up to the point where–instead of just being smart and sensible–people are paranoid about walking around alone.  Thank you, fear mongering America.

In other news, I saw "Raiders of the Lost Ark" at the Trustees Theater last night–it was free, it was entertaining, it was annoyingly out of focus.
